Types of work offered
I work with 3 – 12 year old children and their educators and my courses evolve from much of the practical work I do in school and from children’s and teachers’ interests and needs, often related to current national issues as well as cutting edge research issues. I believe that in-service courses should entertain as well as educate .... there have been too many, “death by acetate sheets” courses! To this end, my days are a blend of theory and practice and they are planned, prepared and resourced to suit the children and teachers concerned.
I offer:
- Courses and conferences on aspects of literacy, mathematics and creativity at Foundation Stage, Key Stage 1 and 2
- Reading and writing workshops
- Bookmaking with children
- Demonstration teaching, classroom organization and support
- Planning for learning in the child centred classroom
- Talks to parents and governors on literacy events to include book readings
- In-service work with teaching assistants
- World book day book related activities
Previous courses I have covered:
- Learning through talk: promoting listening and speaking
- The importance of reading to children of all ages on a regular basis
- The teaching of reading and writing
- Responding to texts – encouraging children to be critical literacy users
- Using rhymes, jingles, games, activities, song and patterned predictable texts to motivate children to learn to read.
- Different kinds of play: role play; outdoor play; small world play

- Science through story – teaching science investigations through story
- Creativity and language - talk, visual literacy and art.
- Popular culture and literacy learning --- tuning into children's interests: Bob the Builder, Tweenies, Beanie Babies
