Janet Evans B Ed., M Ed., MA., Dip Maths Ed., Dip Science Ed., CELTA
Janet is a Senior Lecturer in Education at Liverpool Hope University and part time freelance Literacy and Educational Consultant. Formerly an Early Years and primary school teacher she completed a two year secondment as Literacy Consultant with The National Literacy Strategy from 1998 to 2000.
She has written nine books and resources on language, literacy and maths education for Early Years Foundation Stage, Key Stage 1 and 2 educators, over 70 academic and professional articles on primary education and mathematics curriculum and ten chapters in edited books. She has also reviewed over 50 books, videos and course materials for schools and has given consultancy advice on new literacy and mathematics materials at primary level.
Janet has taught in India, Nigeria, Australia, America, Canada and Spain and was awarded two research scholarships which enabled her to work and study in the USA. She has presented papers at many national and international conferences along with organising and teaching on numerous in-service conferences. Janet still manages to find time to work in schools doing action-based research with young children and their educators.
Her first three books, What’s in the Picture: Responding to Illustrations in Picture Books (Paul Chapman), The Writing Classroom: Aspects of Writing and the Primary Child 3-11years (David Fulton and Heinemann USA) and Literacy Moves On: Using Popular Culture, New Technologies and Critical Literacy in the Primary Classroom, published in 2005 by David Fulton (England) and Heinemann (USA), reflect her research interests of children’s literature, reader response and literature circles, along with her interest in children as writers and the changing nature of literacy in the 21st century.
Her latest book, Talking Beyond the Page: Reading and Responding to Picturebooks, shows how different kinds of picturebooks can be used with children of all ages and highlights the positive gains to be made from reading, sharing, talking and writing about picturebooks.
Her ongoing research interests include children’s literature, critical literacy, reader response and interactive writing linked to popular culture.
