Janet has written five academic books and five professional books. The academic books focus on:
- challenging and controversial picturebooks
- reading and responding to picturebooks
- the changing nature of literacy in the 21st century
- writing and the primary child
- responding to illustrations in picturebooks
In addition she has written five professional “ideas” books for teachers and teacher educators.
In June 2015 she was made Author of the Month by Routledge, the publishers.
